The Department of Geography and the UNESCO Chair on Geoparks and Sustainable Development of insular and coastal areas of the University of the Aegean in collaboration with the Department of Geology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the National Observatory of Athens and the Department of Environment of the University of the Aegean operate the Inter-institutional Postgraduate Program “Natural Hazards and Disaster Mitigation”.
The object of the Postgraduate Program is the promotion of knowledge and the development of research as well as the contribution to the educational, social, cultural and developmental needs of the country, to the training of scientists in matters related to natural hazards and disasters and the preparedness and response with modern methods and techniques of the science of environmental risk management.
Specific objectives of the program include:
- study of the scientific field of the risk of natural disasters with modern methods and techniques
- theoretical and practical consolidation of the necessary specialized scientific knowledge inextricably linked dealing with natural hazards and disasters
- development of advanced skills and abilities of graduates in planning, prevention, preparedness and response to natural hazards and disasters
- study, design and organization of societies to improve their resilience to disasters
- application of these concepts through teaching, both in the laboratory and in the field, research work and participation in educational programs
- dissemination of the interdisciplinary cooperation and learning between groups of scientists and society
