In the run-up to ITB Berlin, representatives from politics, science, and the international geopark network met in the Paul Löbe House of the German Bundestag to discuss the role of UNESCO Global Geoparks in sustainable regional development and responsible tourism.
The UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb was also represented – Iris Bohnacker took part in the exchange with members of the Bundestag and international guests, including Artur Sá, President of the Global Geoparks Network, and Nickolas Zouros, Secretary General of the Executive Board of the Global Geoparks Network.
While Artur Sá emphasized the bottom-up approach and international networking of UNESCO Global Geoparks, Nickolas Zouros underscored that geoparks are created “from the region for the region” – supported by local communities and committed local people.
This was an important exchange on the role of geoparks in sustainable development and tourism.
