International Summer School on Geoparks

Intesive corse on UNESCO Global Geoparks

 

The International Summer School on Geoparks is a leading training activity for professionals of the International Program "UNESCO Global Geoparks" and takes place every year in Lesvos.

The International School on Geoparks is co-organized by the UNESCO Chair on Geoparks and Sustainable Development of insular and coastal areas, the University of the Aegean - Department of Geography, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest and the Global Geoparks Network.

Every year the attendance is high. Among the participants there are Geopark professionals,  tourism agencies, local government representatives, university professors, Phd candidates, researchers of scientific institutions that cooperate with Geoparks and design or implement innovative geological management and promotion activities. The participants come from all over the world (Ivory Coast, Vietnam, North Korea, Northern Macedonia, France, Germany, Switzerland, Ecuador, Zambia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Kenya, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Morocco, Mexico, Mongolia, Benin, Faroe Islands, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, Serbia, Tanzania, Tunisia, Chile and Greece).


Among the lecturers are professors from Greek Universities but also professors from abroad, distinguished scientists from Research Centers and Institutes and specialist scientists from UNESCO.

The scientific director of the International School on Geoparks is professor Nikolaos Zouros, Director of the Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos and President of the Global Geoparks Network and Holder of the UNESCO Chair on Geoparks and Sustainable Development of insular and coastal areas.
