An informative meeting for teachers of Lesvos on the topic "UNESCO Global Geoparks: INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONAL ACTIONS FOR SCHOOLS" will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 6 p.m. in the events hall of the Model General Lyceum of Mytilene of the University of the Aegean.

The meeting is organized by the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest / Lesvos World UNESCO Geopark, the UNESCO Chair of the University of the Aegean "Geoparks and sustainable development of island and coastal areas" in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of the North Aegean.

The aim of the meeting is to inform the teachers of Lesvos about the "UNESCO Global Geoparks" program and the possibilities it offers for the development of international collaborations between schools.

As part of the meeting, the students of the Model General Lyceum of Mytilene of the University of the Aegean, a member of the UNESCO Schools Network - ASPnet, will present the results of their participation in the International Geopark Camp held at the UNESCO Muskau Arch World Geopark located in Germany and Poland .

The UNESCO program "UNESCO World Geoparks" offers a particularly interesting topic of educational activities as Geoparks are ideal destinations for the implementation of educational programs focused on the natural environment, geological monuments and biodiversity, but also on interaction with the cultural heritage of their area .

Geoparks aim to explore and highlight the relationship between the geological heritage, natural protected areas and cultural heritage of a region but also the reconnection of human societies with planet earth.

They also contribute to education about geological natural hazards (earthquakes, floods, landslides, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, etc.), to education about the current climate crisis and the preservation of records of past climate changes, to the adoption of best practices and the utilization of renewable energy sources.

At the same time, Geoparks inform about the sustainable use of natural resources and promote respect for the natural environment and the integrity of the landscape.

The Lesvos Geopark, a founding member of the Global Network of Geoparks that completes 20 years of activity this year, collaborates with the educational community and schools to implement a variety of educational activities and programs!
