Room C, Department of Geography, University of the Aegean

A training seminar for teachers of Lesvos on the topic “UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARCES: LEARNING FIELDS FOR SUSTAINABILITY” will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026 at 9 AM in Room C of the Department of Geography, University of the Aegean.

The Seminar is organized by the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of the North Aegean, the Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos / Lesvos UNESCO Global Geopark and the UNESCO Chair for Geoparks and Sustainable Development of Island and Coastal Areas, of the University of the Aegean

The aim of the meeting is to inform the teachers of Lesvos about the “UNESCO Global Geoparks” program and the possibilities of implementing educational activities in the field in Lesvos UNESCO Global Geopark.

As part of the Seminar, a presentation will be made of the educational activities carried out in Lesvos - UNESCO Global Geopark by students of Primary Education schools of Lesvos.

The “UNESCO Global Geoparks” program offers a particularly interesting theme for educational activities as Geoparks are ideal destinations for the implementation of educational programs focused on the natural environment, geological monuments and biodiversity, as well as on the interaction with the cultural heritage of their region.

The Lesvos Geopark, in collaboration with Schools and Educators, aims to explore and highlight the relationship between the geological heritage monuments, natural protected areas and the cultural heritage of a region, as well as to reconnect the inhabitants with the nature and landscapes of Lesvos.

The Lesvos Geopark also contributes to education regarding geological natural hazards (earthquakes, floods, landslides, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, etc.), to education regarding the current climate crisis and the preservation of records of past climate changes, to the adoption of best practices and the utilization of renewable energy sources.

At the same time, the Lesvos Geopark informs about the sustainable use of natural resources and promotes respect for the natural environment.

The Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, the management body of the Lesvos UNESCO Global Geopark, a founding member of the Global Geoparks Network, collaborates with the educational community and schools to implement various educational actions and programs.
